Although it’s still 2011, Domino artist Cass McCombs has already scheduled a second album titled “Humor Risk” for release on Nov. 8 this year. Teaming up again with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, the Foreign Born bassist who has produced McComb’s “Wit’s End” and “Catacombs” in addition to albums for Glasser and We Are Scientists, the new record will offer a tempo change from previous songs such as the beautiful “County Line.” Whereas the previous album presented a sparse beauty, “Humor Risk” focuses on tight rhythm underneath McCombs’ butter-smooth vocals. Subject matters are also approached in a positive, albeit humorous, perspective as lyrics revolve around issues such as Scientology, Western America and drugs. The lead single, “The Same Thing,” lays the drums and keys on thick, which proves to be a nice transition from balladry to rock.
