Australian pro surfer-turned-musician Ry Cuming had some great instincts when it came to trying his hand at music. Making a splash in a different industry with his raspy falsetto and soul-anchored choruses, Cuming’s songwriting outstrips those trite, beachy sounds most are used to hearing from other fellow pro surfers. His piano- and guitar-based tunes go for more than just a general laid-back vibe, and songs such as “In the Fire” off of his self-titled debut pack in as much heat as his days in the sun previously have. In fact, it sounds like the crooner has found himself at home even if the beaches are on a different coast. It turns out Sara Bareilles, one of L.A.’s most recently beloved songstresses, has beautifully lent her vocals to another stand-out sentimental track of his titled “Always Remember Me.” If soul remains a staple for his pop sensibility, then it won’t be easy to forget Cuming’s voice.
