Video: Gotye, ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’

Gotye may not be a familiar name in the States yet but the Australian multi-instrumental musician and songwriter has been nominated for seven ARIA awards just for his latest record “Making Mirrors” alone, and has even knocked Adele off the charts this summer. Wouter “Wally” De Backer, who performs under the moniker Gotye, has always had a talent for including monumental elements of pathos in his songwriting, and this year’s hit single “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring New Zealand’s Kimbra) in tandem with its exquisite video is his strongest form of storytelling yet. An evocative music video from Gotye is nothing new considering his clips for 2010’s “Heart’s A Mess” and his most recent animated video for “Bronte,” but the details of a broken relationship told through vehement lyrics, body paint in reverse sequence and stop-motion animation do quite a number on both the heart and mind.
