The soundscapes on Julia Holter’s debut album “Tragedy” are equal parts hallucination and incarceration. Oh, and mythology, too, since the Cal Arts-educated Los Angeles composer’s work is based on the Greek play by Euripedes. Holter’s collages are glued together by synth, harmonium, percussive field recordings and her plaintive voice, and at times you’d feel like there’s a traditional song or two imprisoned by her meticulous production if you weren’t already rendered trance-like. Holter’s album came out on Leaving Records and has earned plaudits from a certain national website. This summer, Holter lent the track “Cordula: Murder Ballad” to Dublab’s “Tonalism” Playbutton compilation (which also featured Lucky Dragons, Marcus Fischer and Julianna Barwick, among others) – Playbuttons are nifty wearable mp3 players.
