Ears Wide Open: Spirit Vine

It’s been so long since we first heard from Spirit Vine – their debut EP “Golden” came out in the golden age of January, 2010 – we feel compelled to re-introduce them. Spirit Vine now rages with a lineup of singer-keyboardist Jaquelinne Cingolani, guitarist Gabe Pacheco, bassist Aaron Bustos and drummer Jalise Woodward. They are the latest in a long line of black-dressed L.A. psych-rockers whose brooding soundstorm is at once fanciful and phantasmagorical. Their new “Blue Star” EP forgoes a lot of the drone in favor of drama, a good thing. And Cingolani makes the banging single “Cold Living” feel like an incantation. Even though the band has released but two EPs in almost two years, it’s testimony that Spirit Vine’s spirit is growing.
