Who: James on the main stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: Glad you’re back.
Memorable Because: The least ballyhooed of the U.K. veterans to invade Coachella this year, the Mancunian septet showed why Britpop never gets old. Singer Tim Booth kicked off the set by beckoning the muddy skies with a shout of “Come on thunder!” and then proceeded to deliver a 50-minute tour de catalogue that ended with fans onstage dancing to the hit “Laid.” Booth waded into the crowd on “Sit Down,” the second song, singing first from the barrier (as a fan steadied him) and then crossing it to commune for the rest of “Sit Down.” It was like seeing an old friend, and better if you knew the words.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were Running to Fetch Warmer Clothes: You could’ve shivered a little longer.
