Who: M83 in the Mojave Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Need bigger tent.
Memorable Because: Anthony Gonzalez and crew are, of course, a known quantity in these parts, but like the youngsters from L.A. who waited four hours on the rail to ensure they wouldn’t be shut out [see today’s introductory post], I wanted to see the festival presentation, even with no fewer than four Coachella sets commanding attention at the same time. Turns out it was similar to their past two L.A. tour stops; still, though, it was a rafter-rattler of the highest degree, the crowd going nuts for “Midnight City.” Pure claustrophobia induced me to escape the M83 tent for a couple of songs to catch some of the Black Angels in the under-attended adjacent tent, and they were there magnificent stoner-rock selves, the delay up so high that when Christian Bland addressed the crowd it sounded like “hope-hope, you-you, guys-guys, are-are, having-having a-a good-good night-night.” is is the longer expository paragraph.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at the Black Keys: Much respect, but here were some headliners too.
