It’s been six years since Chan Marshall’s released original material (2006’s “The Greatest”) and four years since her last studio album (2008’s “Jukebox”), but Marshall, aka Cat Power, finally returns with “Ruin.” The surprisingly spirited Latin-flavored track is the first single off her forthcoming album “Sun” (due Sept. 4 via Matador) and may surprise fans of her moodier days when her live shows were unpredictable due to stage fright and substance abuse. Marshall may have purposely embodied the smoky tones of Memphis ’60s R&B for her most successful record, but the jaunty manner in which she lists all the locales she’s visited during her absence certainly comes with a strong hook. You’ll be humming “Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Taiwan, Great Britain” for days.
