Ear Wide Open: Rainbow Jackson

Although all those hooks in Rainbow Jackson‘s scuzzed-up power-pop might tickle your melody bone, there’s a defiant side to the L.A. quartet, like when Chad Carlisle sings “I’d rather drown than settle down.” Formerly calling themselves SCLA, Carlisle, Sam Daggett, Laith Khalaf and Andy Ford have a thing for crunchy, Nuggets-worthy tunes. “Robinson Crusoe” could easily be the hit at any summer pool party, but Rainbow Jackson doesn’t lack the substance when it comes to telling a story – even if it’s delivered with a little bit of slacker charm. Their self-released debut EP, “Rippin’ Off the Rails,” is out Tuesday.
