The Baseball Project, who showed us their stuff at SXSW in 2011, has done a great job on two albums in combining two our two favorite things, pop music and the national pastime. Recent developments in San Francisco inspired the Baseball Project’s Scott McCaughey to write and record “Why Melky Why? – a lament directed at Giants’ All-Star outfielder Melky Cabrera, who this week was suspended by Major League Baseball for violating its substance abuse policies. Cabrera tested positive for testosterone. McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows, the Minus 5) hits a solo home run here, working without Baseball Project collaborators Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3), Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Linda Pitmon (Miracle 3, Golden Smog). No gloating, Dodger fans.
