Ears Wide Open: Jeffertitti’s Nile

1

The online introduction to Jeffertitti’s Nile describes his role on the planet as “cosmic interpreter,” which is as good a place as any to start diving into the psychedelic explorations of the enigmatic Jeffertitti Moon (aka Jeff Ramuno). Let’s start in the now: Jeffertitti’s Nile’s new single “Upside,” with a guitar that snakes then swirls then ’splodes, feels as if it goes to the moon and back, all in under 2 1/2 minutes. The single (and its wonderfully wonky B-side “Downside”), recorded by Crystal Antlers’ Jonny Bell, follows some lower-fi releases in 2010 and ’11, and it augurs great things for Jeffertitti’s Nile’s forthcoming 10-inch EP “The Electric Hour.” The new recordings were made with Josh Tillman on drums – Ramuno plays bass and sings in Father John Misty – and if they’re anything like “Upside,” we can’t wait to leave on the trip.
