Ears Wide Open: Broadheds

Apparently taking control of the label he co-founded, Dangerbird Records, was not the most punk-rock thing Peter Walker will have done this year. Walker – who has released albums with his band Eulogies and under his own name – today unveiled the new project Broadheds, a ska-punk-leaning quartet with an all-star cast. And we do not use “all-star” indiscriminately: Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, producer extraordinaire) mans the bass, with Fitz & the Tantrums sax man James King and in-demand drummer Denny Weston Jr. (the Kooks, Earlimart) on board. Walker says the quartet is not just a studio venture: “What sets this experience apart for me is the band’s passion to stick together and bring the music to a live setting.” An album, complete with a 62-page book featuring the work of illustrator Mark Todd, is due in 2013, and two Broadheds songs will make their debut on “Grey’s Anatomy” tonight. The teaser single, “Nothing That I Care About,” suggests Walker has been communing with the ghost of Joe Strummer. Which would be pretty punk-rock too.
