Fol Chen, L.A.’s merry band of sound collagists led by producers (the men known as) Samuel Bing and Julian Wass, return in March with their third collection of wonky, effects-laden pop. The band announced today that “The False Alarms” would be out March 19 on Asthmatic Kitty, the label that gave us Fol Chen’s “Part I: John Shade, Your Fortune’s Made” in 2009 and “Part II: The New December” in 2010. Like all but a handful of Fol Chen’s songs (“Cable TV” and “In Ruins” qualify as singles in the indie universe), the new song “200 Words” draws from a “junk drawer” (the press release’s words, not mine) of sounds. But like all good collages, the assemblage somehow works, even at more than 6 minutes. The vocals come courtesy of Sinosa Loa, the featured singer on the new album.
