Mind the Gap threw their collective hats in the ring of pop contenders in 2011, mixing feel-good acoustic numbers with dancefloor-friendly electro to win fans at residencies on both sides of town. They sell themselves as rainbow-coalition entertainment – “MTG is a Sri Lankan, a Mexican, a Korean and a Jew from Cleveland,” their bio boasts – but their approach is pretty straightforward: Here’s a hook, there’s your beat, now dance. It’s nothing if not well-executed; keyboardist Ruwanga Samath and bassist Oscar Doniz had some estimable production credits when they joined up with Greg Cahn and Alex Yang, who’d been doing business as Cahn & Yang. “Find My Way,” the first single off Mind the Gap’s forthcoming “Youth” EP – might find its way onto some party mixes, and the video for the song comes courtesy of James Curtis.

I agree that’s it’s nothing if not well executed, but lean more towards the “it’s nothing” part. I know they’re multicultural, and that’s really nice and all, but I don’t get why they even mention where they’re from. It’s irrelevant here. They sound like generic american dance pop (like Spoon kind of) … but from a boy band. I guess people like knowing their music comes from people who were born in other countries? Must be a marketing thing.

Bravo for the chip on your shoulder Ildolfo. You couldn’t give away more if you were a a coupon in the Sunday paper. But seriously, looking at how their sound has developed from their first EP I am impressed. They kept the spirit of their first cd and infused it with a lot more power from the keys. You could definitely feel the ‘two man ensemble’ with the good fight’s composition (not that it was a bad thing), but their new track shows how much they’ve grown the sound of MTG into a full fledged band. Looking forward to more!
