If you’ve been to Mystery Skulls‘ residency this month but still wonder why the guy behind this one-man show looks familiar, it’s because you were probably a fan of Luis Dubuc’s previous project, the Secret Handshake. Although the former moniker gained a following in the electronic realm, Mystery Skulls leaves the soul-influenced bubblegum electro-pop behind and branches out into EDM in songs like “You” off his latest EP and even New Jack Swing in newer songs like “When I’m With You.” Dubuc’s move from Dallas, to City of Angels may have had something to do with his sonic shift, but no matter. As the sweaty people on the dance floor will tell you, the kids have found their next party sound. File next to Daft Punk with an ’80s twist.
