Coachella 2013: Savages, with fists clenched

Who: Savages in the Mojave Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: The ferocious four.
Memorable Because: The only hint of girly-ness at Savages’ set was the pair of pink heels lead singer Jehnny Beth wore, but I’m almost certain that small fashion bit went unnoticed, since the all-female post-punk quartet played a set so raw, it tore open the sweltering atmosphere a new hole for 40 minutes of fresh air. This wasn’t your cutesy Tegan & Sara set. This wasn’t the Cranberries – although Beth’s haircut is very similar to Dolores O’Riordan’s – this is what the Riot Grrrl movement must have aspired to be in the ’90s. Urgent, primal and unrelenting (drummer Fay Milton’s energy was most dynamic), Savages’ eruption of noise and melodic brooding started out this blogger’s Saturday with a bang.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at Danny Brown: Anything he can say, they can say better.
