Stream: Hindu Pirates, ‘In the Dark’

Those high school days as just another surf-punk band are fading into distant memories for Orange County’s Hindu Pirates. Although the new tightly wound guitar rock from the quintet of Austin Ferreira, Casey Snyder, Giuseppe LoBasso, Derek Bostelman and Ben Tinsley still carries the faint scene of the ocean, the single “In the Dark” suggests the roar of ’90s alt-rockers and the woozy psychedelic blues that preceded them. The song was just released as a split 7-inch (L.A. quartet Rainbow Jackson, premiered here last week, is on the flip side) on Near Mess Records. With so many guitar bands content to inhabit their genre foxholes, Hindu Pirates (with an EP on the way before summer is up) appear poised to lead a charge into something not so easily bracketed.
