The iconic tourist trap known as the Santa Monica Pier is fast becoming Los Angeles’ hottest concert venue.
Aloe Blacc [pictured at the 2012 Silver Lake Jubilee], Allen Stone and Michael Rose of Black Uhuru (with the production duo Sly and Robbie) will head up a new two-day, soul/reggae event called the Beach Ball at the pier on Sept. 21 and 22. It’s a soul revue one day and reggae show the next. Two-day passes are $30 (on sale Friday) but use the early-bird code “PIERLOVE” to get them now. The lineup also includes Maceo Parker, Lee Fields & the Expressions, the Skatalites, U Roy and Soul Syndicate.
This follows the recent announcements of the Way Over Yonder Festival (with Conor Oberst, Neko Case, Brett Dennen, First Aid Kit, Calexico, Justin Townes Earle, the Felice Brothers and more) on Oct. 5 and 6, and the Festival Supreme music-and-comedy event on Oct. 19.
KCRW is co-presenting the Beach Ball, as well as the free Twilight Concert Series starting in July. In case you missed it, the lineup for that series is after the jump:
July 11: Surfer Blood
July 18: Meshell Ndegeocello
July 25: No Age
Aug. 1: Xavier Rudd
Aug. 8: Hanni El Khatib and Bombino
Aug. 15: The English Beat
Aug. 22: Nick Waterhouse and the Boogaloo Assassins
Aug. 29: TBA (“a very special attraction from New Orleans”)
Sept. 5: Indie rock show TBA.
Sept. 12: Jimmy Cliff
