Stream: Ballerina Black, ‘Knves,’ ‘Birth of a Felony’

Ballerina Black’s music – like the ’80s post-punkers and ’90s alt-rockers from which they draw – is the sonic equivalent to the light at the end of the tunnel. Frequently, that tunnel is dark, and for the L.A. quartet, it has been long; singer-guitarist Bobby Moynahan and various compatriots have been at it for about four years, refining their craft as they go. Their recent series of EPs speaks to the notion they have found a comfortable balance between shadow and light. Ballerina Black’s new batch of “gloom pop” (as they call it) suggests a less desperately romantic (or more inscrutable) Cure. A nice progression from their 2010 full-length “Cattle Arithmetic,” the EPs – all under variations on the “Injureless” title – go for an ear-friendly balance of guitar, synths and atmospherics. Fans of old-school British dreampop and shoegaze will find a lot to like here.
