Following the EPs “Thuggin’” from 2011, and “Shame” from 2012, as well as this summer’s track “City” for the Adult Swim Singles Series, Gary, Indiana’s Freddie Gibbs and Los Angeles’ own Madlib are back with “Deeper,” the final EP to be released before their long-awaited joint album. Even gangsters get their hearts broken, as a ferocious Gibbs raps a tale of history between an ex and its effects. “Maybe you’s a stank ho, maybe that’s a bit mean / Maybe you grew up and I’m still living like I’m sixteen,” he flows, and later, “I loved her and she loved him, so I never touched him / She’s got his baby in the oven, so it’s mother f*ck him.” His powerful, near-seamless verses of storytelling are raw, describing heartbreak’s deep and deeper cuts with such a heart-on-sleeve honesty, yet still so hard in that husky gangster growl. Madlib’s production echoes the maudlin sentiment, with heavy, warped strings and soul snippets that ride a deep bass groove. “Deeper” features the title track, a B-side “Harold’s,” instrumentals of each, plus two bonus beats, and will be released Sept. 24 on 12-inch vinyl through Madlib’s own Madlib Invazion. Their forthcoming collaborative album “Piñata,” produced entirely by Madlib, is due out in February 2014, and is set to feature Raekwon, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Domo Genesis, Joey Bada$$, Ab-Soul, BJ the Chicago Kid, Mac Miller, and more.
