We were still nursing our SXSW hangover last spring when Spirit Animal – the New York-based quartet fronted by L.A. ex-pat Steve Cooper – busted out this song-and-dance at the Satellite. It being Silver Lake, the crowd was slow to join in, but “The Black Jack White” probably has a bright future as a party starter. The song is exemplary of the foursome’s bone-rattling electro-funk; absent the fey robot beats in music that filters old soul through laptops, Spirit Animal’s 2012 album “This Is a Test” was mostly bombast, built on the muscle of rhythm section Paul Michel and Ronen Evron and sparkling with tasty licks from guitarist Cal Stamp (aka The Rev. Cal Sharpton). “The Black Jack White” anchors Spirit Animal’s new EP, “Kingdom Phylum” (out this week). Now, back to practicing our moves.
