Donnie & Joe Emerson’s “Baby” has been covered more times than we count, but Los Angeles-via-Tempe electronic duo Dead Times spins it with a dark groove. Comprised of members Calvin Markus and Travis Bunn, the duo dips all their melodies in R&B falsetto and coats their beats in heavy bass. Calling all DJs who like to play the obscure disco tunes but secretly jam out to Justin Timberlake singles in their bedroom: Dead Times is for you, and probably for a lot of others. Their early single “Inner Gold” balances swagger with simple finger snaps then dives into a pool of warped vocals while newer songs like “Feel” offers upbeat lyrics such as “My best is yet to come / like eventually/ the sun.” File next to How to Dress Well and Active Child.
