Ears Wide Open: One Finger Riot

It’s been a little over a year since we’ve heard from Faris McReynolds, but the last time he was dishing out tunes it was under the moniker ExDetectives. The painter and musician returns with new material for his project One Finger Riot this time, and although we’ve briefly mentioned this band before, the new EP  “Boredinaire (Pt. 1)” calls for a reintroduction. Whereas ExDectectives explored McReynolds’ interest in bringing color to indie rock, One Finger Riot’s foundation is electronic. Fans of Air will take note. Lead single “Lifted Off” is hazy shoegazing and light psychedelia wrapped in smooth Krautrock, a song McReynolds himself says is “the unintentional result of having listened to ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ and ‘How Soon Is Now?’ about a million times each throughout my life.” The EP is the first in a series inspired by his recent interest in Tao Te Ching and Bollywood, which led him to a retreat on the edge of SoCal’s Mojave desert to record in a converted garage outside of Joshua Tree. “Boredinare (Pt. 1)” is out now via Post Planetary.
