Video: The Bots, ‘5:17’

The Bots have been at it since they were kids … except guitarist Mikaiah Lei and drummer Anaiah Lei still kinda are. They’re 20 and 16 years old, respectively, but they have the souls of their elder blues rockers, and it’s not hard to invoke the name of Jimi Hendrix (and here we genuflect) during their 3-minute blast “5:17.” The song, from September’s “Sincerely Sorry” EP, and the string of releases that preceded it have earned the Glendale-based punk-blues duo hot-band status. Their ferocious guitar rock certainly affects the protangonist, played by Christopher Masterson, in the new video directed by skate photographer Giovanni Reda. The Bots are on working on another EP and are on their way to Coachella in April. In another recent video, they do an acoustic version of “No One Knows” while walking backwards down a deserted highway. There may be some symbolism there.
