James Supercave appeared on the landscape in 2012, the band briefly known as Masxs unveiling some rough-hewn demos and playing exhilarating live shows that immediately put their music in a league of its own. Not so fast with the next-big-thing accolades, though: The quintet of singer-guitarist Joaquin Pastor, abetted by Patrick Logothetti, Andrés Villalobos, Jaysun Rickards and Richy Epolito, spent much of 2013 honing their craft, stealing shows as the opening act at club gigs along the way. In March, James Supercave will release its first proper EP, and the first song to emerge, “The Right Thing,” shows they have the right stuff. It’s a compositionally dextrous thrill ride of indie rock and electro sprinkled with a little bit of Ziggy’s stardust and Pastor’s don’t-try-this-at-home falsetto. Finally, some art-rockers that live up to the name art-rockers.

i like some of the music, but they should really get a new singer
I saw these guys live a month or so ago. and WOW i had my mind fucking blew! the singer bring such raw power and emotion to their performance, see them live before judging!
if this was an mgmt B side, mgmt would be relevant. but it’s not and they aren’t. i’ve seen both bands live, and JS would put them to shame.

it sounds good, it’s ambitious, but there is no voice here, no song, and the style is pretty dated. haven’t seen them live yet

it’s easy to write something off when your ears are only used to songs with lots of production
but when you’ve been around the music since before it was even a complete thought in someone’s head, it’s a little easier to appreciate
or when you know what it’s like to take a song from an idea to more than that, you can appreciate their songs despite production value on these recordings
I love J-cave and totally support their movement and their moment – seen them live more times than can count on both hands because I want to, and because it’s a good show
