The L.A. duo DWNTWN immediately earned officer’s stripes in the synth-pop army with the single “See My Eyes” which was featured on the French label Kitsuné’s compilation of American bands almost two years ago. The team of Jamie Leffler and Robert Cepeda solidified that rank with last year’s “The Red Room” EP. With Chris Sanchez’s arrival to make the band a trio, DWNTWN has aligned with new Jullian Records, which will release the band’s new self-titled EP on April 29. DWNTWN’s new single “Til Tomorrow,” while less reliant on electronics, offers a clinic in how to make restrained but devastatingly affecting indie-pop. From the tasteful guitars to Leffler’s airy vocals to the slippery synths, it recalls a lot of twee-pop greats from two decades ago. More sugar, yes, but hold the cloying.
