We’re not sure how much Merseybeat can be found in the music of the Mercy Beat, but we long ago learned not to divine anything from band names, punny or otherwise. The Mercy Beat surfaced last April, doing a co-residency with DWNTWN at the dearly departed Santa Monica club the Central SAPC. As we reported then, the L.A. quartet is the new endeavor of the Bravery’s Sam Endicott, whose emotive vocals are at the fore in the Mercy Beat’s first single “Sweet.” The swoon-worthy synth-pop tune is a full-on plunge into ’80s New Wave, time-stamped about 1984. The Mercy Beat has tentative plans to release music this summer or fall; save those slow dances till then.
