Ears Wide Open: Zella Day

The lines between folk and pop seemed to become more blurred each day, but if it’s because of songs like Zella Day‘s breakout single “Sweet Ophelia,” then we can’t be too upset about it. With a seductive soundscape that echos both danger and ethereal glamour, the single features Day’s powerful vocals in a sticker-than-honey hook. The singer-songwriter, who recently relocated to Los Angeles from Pinetop, Ariz., does pop with hints of influences by folk artists she discovered while growing up in a family-owned coffee shop. Not sure if this makes her melodies more sincere, but the b-side single “1965” is also undeniable when it comes to mid-tempo pop ballads. Zella Day’s “Sweet Ophelia” 7-inch is slated for an April 7 release via B3CSI (home to singles by Jungle and Misun). File next to Cillie Barnes, Lana Del Rey.
