Los Angeles MC and producer Paris Jones has been a roll. After putting out the mixtape “You’re Invited to the Assassination of Patrick Campbell by Paris Jones” in the fall – sampling Active Child, Ellie Goulding and James Blake – he has set out to release an EP each month this year, so far offering up the calendar-dictated “January” and “February” EPs. His latest, as you could guess, is “March,” a six-song collection built entirely on flipping Janelle Monáe samples into something new. “The Cold War” runs her song “Cold War” through the remix ringer with a throbbing synth and an ever-shifting percussive backbone, like Liars doing a take on Madvillain’s “Figaro” and capping it with a drum-and-bass finish; “Electric Ladies” combines the a capella of MF Doom’s “My Favorite Ladies” and the chopped-up and sped-up Monáe “Electric Lady;” and “HipHop 101 (Dont Forget)” includes vocals from Common, Erykah Badu and A Tribe Called Quest’s “1nce Again” over a beat inspired by “It’s Code.” Three down, nine to go.
