Los Angeles MC and producer Paris Jones has been a roll. After putting out the mixtape “You’re Invited to the Assassination of Patrick Campbell by Paris Jones†in the fall – sampling Active Child, Ellie Goulding and James Blake – he has set out to release an EP each month this year, so far offering up the calendar-dictated “January†and “February†EPs. His latest, as you could guess, is “March,†a six-song collection built entirely on flipping Janelle Monáe samples into something new. “The Cold War†runs her song “Cold War†through the remix ringer with a throbbing synth and an ever-shifting percussive backbone, like Liars doing a take on Madvillain’s “Figaro†and capping it with a drum-and-bass finish; “Electric Ladies†combines the a capella of MF Doom’s “My Favorite Ladies†and the chopped-up and sped-up Monáe “Electric Lady;†and “HipHop 101 (Dont Forget)†includes vocals from Common, Erykah Badu and A Tribe Called Quest’s “1nce Again†over a beat inspired by “It’s Code.†Three down, nine to go.
