Maybe it’s the musical climate or maybe it’s the time the band spent with production svengali Richard Swift in Oregon, but Tijuana Panthers appear poised to break free of their surf-garage-rock chains. The Long Beach trio’s new album “Wayne Interest” comes via Innovative Leisure on June 3, about a year after 2013’s tight, retro-tasty outing “Semi-Sweet.” For the new recordings, Chad Wachtel, Phil Shaheen and Dan Michcoff visited the National Freedom studio helmed by Swift, the onetime SoCal resident who has worked with Damien Jurado, Gardens & Villa, Tennis, Foxygen and Jessie Baylin and is now playing in the Shins. In premiering the single “Cherry Street,” Fader noted the New Order vibe. Post-punk goes to the beach? We’re OK with that.
