Coachella 2014: Foster the People, more pumped up

Who: Foster the People on the Main stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: Where’s the hook?
Unmemorable Because: The last time L.A.’s Foster the People took the stage at Coachella, it was 2011 and they had a crowd so big fans were spilling out of the Gobi tent just to hear the three songs they knew from the band’s self-titled debut EP. Flash forward three years and they’re playing the Main Stage, a festival slot perfectly timed to support their sophomore album “Supermodel.” Only this time, Foster the People was determined to show the fans they were more than just the electro-pop act responsible for the hit song “Pumped Up Kicks.” Their ambition, however, seemed to get mixed reviews from the crowd who slowly but surely trickled in. With songs such as “A Beginner’s Guide to Destroying the Moon” and “Pseudologia Fantastica,” Foster the People seemed committed to proving that they were also a rock band. The new psychedelic flourishes were admirable but perhaps lost on fans who just wanted songs like “Houdini” and “Helena Beat.” The band didn’t refuse them the hits, but they also didn’t win everyone over.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Solange: YOU WIN. Yes, I know; I missed the cutest sister dancing moment in Coachella history. Sigh.
