Joie Calio and Phil Leavitt, collaborating as 7Horse, embarked on their journey into cosmic country and dirty blues three years ago, releasing the testosterone-charged full-length “Let the 7Horse Run” in 2011 and earning some notoriety when the single “Meth Lab Zoso Sticker” was tabbed by director Martin Scorcese for use in the movie (and trailer for) “The Wolf of Wall Street.” The duo is diving deeper into vintage country for the follow-up album, “Songs for a Voodoo Wedding” – Leavitt says it’s only natural, since he and Calio spent countless hours in a van touring the U.S. listening to the likes of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, George Jones and Merle Haggard. It was in that van, en route to playing the 4 & 20 Blackbird Festival in the town of Weed, Calif., that they sketched out the song “A Friend in Weed.” It’s a stripped-down country tune that’s the album closer on their new release, which comes out June 10. “A Friend in Weed” is available as a single today, because, well, you’d have to be really stoned to not realize what today’s date is.
