Ears Wide Open: Princess Reason

Princess Reason

Sometimes all you need is a sad voice and fuzzy, buzzing guitar tone to remind you that the simplest recordings can move you the most. Elliot Smith, Bright Eyes, Sparklehouse and Slowreader have all bent and twisted many hearts with emotions on their early material, and L.A.’s Jack Stansbury – aka Princess Reason – may be the next in line to do so, too. Despite this being Princess Reason’s sophomore EP, “Stark City” is still as lo-fi as ever. However, there’s a comfort in those naked chords (with a few keys sprinkled in there for embroidery) and songs like the title track flash you back to adolescent days: bedroom door shut, lights turned off, lying in bed with hands folded behind the head while staring into the ceiling (which may or may not have been covered with glow-in-the-dark stars). Heck, the new EP even has a song titled “Get Sad Too,” and you can’t help but follow his instructions there. Princess Reason’s “Stark City” EP is out now via New Professor Music, which is also home to Body Parts, Air Life, yOya, LA Font and Gothic Tropic.
