In March we shared the demo for “Singing Bridges,” a work-in-progress by EFG, the talented triumvirate of Imaad Wasif, Josh Garza and Tom Biller. Having started as a duo under the name Electric Flower (eventually morphing to Electric Flower Group), Wasif and Garza released two EPs of tantalizing, next-level psych-rock before adding Grammy-winning producer Biller (who has worked with Kate Nash, Warpaint, Karen O, et al) as bassist. Wasif is known for his axe work on his solo albums and in bands such as Alaska!, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the New Folk Implosion; drummer Garza provided the thunder for the late, great Secret Machines. With those resumés, naturally, there should be high anticipation for the results of EFG’s year of woodshedding, and “Singing Bridges” does not disappoint. It’s a rager that only suggests, rather than mimics, its players’ past projects. EFG now has two albums’ worth of material recorded – “Amorpha” is the working title of the one they have ready to go – and fans of sophisticated heavy music will want to test the limits of their speakers on this one. Neither the cosmic-kids-stuff psych-rock that’s everywhere these days nor the overly tried-and-true blues-rock that’s never gone away, EFG is puts the power in power trio. Try to sit still when Garza’s drums kick in.
