Twenty years ago today, O.J. Simpson led police on a slow-speed chase through southern California, before the Hall of Fame running back was arrested on charges that he killed his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman. It was a spectacle that was not lost on the very young Harlan Silverman, who would go on to become a singer, songwriter and producer. “I remember being a little kid in L.A. when the whole O.J. thing went down. The chase was such a talked-about event,” he says. “[Then] I saw the 30/30 ESPN special on it and thought, why not write a song.” For a guy who once bonded with Don Henley’s media-savaging hit “Dirty Laundry” [check out Harlan’s cover here], “Freeway” strikes a familiar tone.
