Ears Wide Open: Rare Darling

After meeting on the set of a music video in 2013, Connie Ha and Filip Bekic traveled the world together and decided their relationship needed another outlet. Naturally, the idea and initial soundscapes for Rare Darling were conceived a year later at a cabin in Sweden. Although the two are currently based in Stockholm and planning on returning to the City of Angels to work further on the EP, Rare Darling has already begun to share tunes with some possible legs. Presenting various angles of the genre, Rare Darling has thrown out three nuggets of ear candy for electro-pop lovers so far. “We’ve Got Time” is a cool breezy tune that heavily features Ha’s butter-smooth vocals and a nice percolating back beat, while “Cold Sweat”  is more on par with the happy radio-friendly anthems Bekic is used to writing. The latter oddly falls somewhere between the Naked and Famous and the ’90s band Real McCoy; Bekic’s rapping and singing is interchanged while Ha’s voice is filtered for megaphone effect. Their newest tune “Why Won’t You Let Me Go,” however, is darker with booming bass lines and shadowy vocals. Another L.A. synth-pop duo? Yes. Another tune (or three) to add to your summer mix? Probably.
