Ears Wide Open: Dorothy

Dorothy Martin certainly is camera-friendly. Is that her on the pin-up websites? Was that her with DJ Ashba back in the day? Maybe, but this just in: The model/writer/(former?) health and beauty blogger can wail, as evidenced in “After Midnight,” the first single from the four-piece that bears her name, Dorothy. In a city that breeds blues divas faster than the Sunset Strip attracts tourists, “After Midnight” is distinctive – bold, no-frills revivalist rock that’s more crimson than the frontwoman’s lipstick, not to mention reminiscent of the Kills. Martin is joined in the band by guitarist Mark Jackson, bassist Eliot Lorango and drummer Zac Morris, and ever since the band’s video (directed by George Robertson and Aris Jerome) for the song emerged last month, record-label folks have been in a tizzy. So have we.
||| Live: Dorothy plays July 17 at the Satellite on a bill that includes the Ruse and Kristeen Young.
