Stream: The Rosebuds, ‘Esse Quam Videri’

The Rosebuds have been a lot of things since they won our hearts with “The Rosebuds Make Out” more than a decade ago – folk balladeers, brooding synth-poppers, purveyors of affecting jangle-pop. The core duo of Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp took a couple years off after 2011’s post-divorce record “Loud Planes Fly Low,” but they returned this week with their sixth album, “Sand + Silence.” The beach metaphor is apt; here, the Rosebuds seem their most optimistic, fusing all the musical elements from their past into dreamy, propulsive rock with lush harmonies. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon – with whom Howard played in the supergroup Gayngs – co-produced the album (and played on it) in his Wisconsin studio. Bon Iver drummer Matt McCaughan and Sylvan Esso’s Nick Sanborn contribute as well. It’s a beautifully crafted thing, “Sand + Silence,” and it’s good to have the Rosebuds back.
