Fool’s Gold brought its bright Afro-pop to the Figat7th Downtown Festival on Friday night, the fifth of six weeks of free concerts on the plaza above the downtown retail center. The L.A. quintet previewed some songs from its forthcoming third album and played favorites from its 2009 self-titled debut and 2011’s “Leave No Trace” as well, with frontman Luke Top’s croon seemingly reaching for the tops of the adjacent skyscrapers amid Lewis Pesacov’s sharp guitar licks and the frisky polyrhythms of the band’s dual percussionists. Deradoorian – the L.A.-based solo project of ex-Dirty Projectors’ Angel Deradoorian – opened with a set of experimental keyboard- and loop-driven songs notable for their soaring vocals and harmonies. The Figat7th Downtown Festival winds up next Friday night with free performances by the Belle Brigade and In the Valley Below.
