Together, the two albums being released this year by L.A. quartet Dot Hacker would comprise an opus – they’ve created 68 sonically expansive minutes of music all told, experimenting in painterly guitar textures, deep grooves and seemingly capricious rhythmic shifts. The band is guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and three fellow sophisticates with whom he started collaborating before his currennt gig as Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, Clint Walsh, Jonathan Hischke and Eric Gardner. Earlier this year, Dot Hacker decided to divide and conquer; the first album “How’s Your Process? (Work)” came out July 1. Part 2 is titled “How’s Your Process? (Play),” coming Oct. 7. It’s six songs and 31-plus minutes of effects-juiced music that exists in its own melodic netherworld. “Memory” originally was a B-side of Dot Hacker’s Record Store Day release, and “Somersault” sounds like something a Smashing Pumpkin might do if unburdened by his catalog. In other words, if you’re looking for sing-along choruses, move along. If you’re looking to expand your horizons, hop aboard.
