It’s been almost five years since the Black Ryder – the L.A.-based duo of Australians Scott Von Ryper and Aimee Nash – released their album “Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride,” which placed them squarely in the middle of the pack of next-wave shoegazers. Given the long incubation period for the follow-up, could the Black Ryder have something groundbreaking up their sleeves? The jury’s out. The new song “Santaria,” like much of their debut, is dense and foreboding, its textures of overdriven guitar exemplary of long line of bands who’ve used pedals as their mettle. But absent much in the way melody, it plods until Nash’s choral background vocals (reminiscent of the Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”) creep in about the 4-minute mark. The duo’s second album, “The Door Behind the Door,” is in the works. Turn it up, shoegaze heads, the Black Ryder are giving you what you need.
