Ears Wide Open: BØRNS

Exactly as its title suggests, “10,000 Emerald Pools” is a pretty song, really pretty. And it’s the rare pretty pop song these days that doesn’t assault your senses with synthesizers; instead, this one relies on a simple insistent bass line, simply perfect guitar chords and the vocals of Garrett Borns, whose gender-unspecific falsetto is pretty stratospheric. Borns, who’s doing business as BØRNS, is a Michigander who moved to L.A. about a year ago to work on his music. He’s been collaborating with songwriter/producer/variety show host Kennedy, even playing in the latter’s house band. An EP is on the way before the year is up, and it’s likely to provide even more notes we can’t possibly hit while singing in the shower.
