On their 2013 debut album “In Guards We Trust,” NYC’s Guards engaged in addictive pop with hefty hooks, the trio’s retro-flavored, radio-friendly songs only baring their teeth live. The band returned this week with a new single, the self-released “Nothing More” that sounds like more of the same. Here, the trio – Orange County natives Richie James Follin and Loren Humphrey (who once played in the Willowz), along with Kaylie Church – crafts a would-be anthem with twinkling synths and a soulful backdrop. Perfectly nice, if a little short on the payoff. Guards are working on their next ful-length, due in 2015. In other news, can you believe it’s been 10 years since we talked to a kid named “Richie Eaton” about the Willowz’ debut album?
