Los Angeles alt-R&B crooner Jarell Perry returns with “Quiet Life,” a track produced by APSPDR (SZA, BOSCO) that melds pulsing 808s and heartache. However, the forlorn tones in the hazy track come from a different place as Perry sings “Living loud is lonely.” It’s a dark yet beautiful ballad about becoming homesick during one’s pursuit of passion and fame. It’s a story many Angelenos can probably relate to while they navigate a dog-eat-dog city. Although Perry has kept himself busy since 2014’s “White EP” by releasing covers like Drake’s “Own It,” fans will be pleased to hear that the singer has a follow-up titled “The Color of Sound” slated for a March release. No matter the theme on this forthcoming record, we can count on Perry’s butter-smooth vocals and cutting-edge neo-soul arrangements.
