Ears Wide Open: Roah Summit

With all the lap steel guitar, you would think Roah Summit were grew up in Laurel Canyon instead of Costa Mesa. Jake Berry (vocals), Max Epstein (bass), Tyler Spry (lap steel), Jay Obedunmi (drums), Kevin Clarke (synths) and Drew Chaffee (guitar) make for quite the large ensemble, but their abundance of talent yields a gorgeous hybrid of melody and sound. Tracks like “Mother American” and “Secrets” off their debut EP “Deep Bloom” recall the rolling waves of Tycho, the pathos of Matt Berninger’s baritone and the vulnerability of Ryan Adams. Roah Summit may just be getting started, but they’re miles ahead of fellow young bands with their sophisticated textures and storytelling arches.
