Ears Wide Open: Behon

L.A. septet Behon began with the solo folk songs of singer-guitarist Brendan Han, then grew faster than college dorm room after somebody texted there’s a free kegger. Han first enlisted childhood friend (and trombonist) Jeff Leblow, who in turn recruited several friends from the Occidental College music community, including drummer Mike Ursu, saxophonist Alyssa Cottle, saxophonist-violinist Wayana Dolan and keyboardist Sean Embrey-Stine. With almost everybody pitching in background vocals, Behon’s “Head and Heart” EP, boasts fully orchestrated and achingly earnest songs not unlike those of fellow folk-pop ensemble Run River North. The lovelorn title track is exemplary, doing a slow build helped by horns and gang vocals.
