A band that announces a new album which instantly receives accolades like “hottest in the world,” let alone “track of the day” or “tune of the week,” has to go big when it comes to a new music video. And so it is with U.K. band Foals, whose video for “Mountain At My Gates” uses a crazy new GoPro “spherical virtual reality technology” that pretty much mimics the effect of riding the Gravitron at the county fair if you keep holding down the button. If you’re a dummy like moi — feel no shame, it’s a new tech afterall — you need directions to the button; it’s in the upper-left corner of the video, and it allows you to spin the video in all directions like dreidel. You can watch a behind the scenes about using this new trick for the first time on a music video, which allows the viewer to surround his or herself with not one, but two, or five or more iterations of Yannis Philippakis and his guitar at once. The band is excited about their new album, “What Went Down,” which deals with existential matters like “permanence and impermanence; life and death; solitude; vulnerability; intimacy; passion; rage; humanity” … basically, the ABCs of instrospection, and it supports the subjects with both heavy and softer musical moments throughout. It comes out Aug. 28 via Warner Bros.
