This summer, Yep Roc released Eleni Mandell‘s 10th album, and soon thereafter she took off across the country with her kiddies in tow to sing it for people. Thanks to the gentle stalking afforded by social media, we have been able to see her smiling in different places, holding up her children in front of the Grand Canyon, and generally looking like an extension of the songs she has written. By this I mean she looks satisfied, taken by whimsy, and a little bit in love with her surroundings. Her new album, “Dark Lights Up,” collects moments of reflection that prompted her to write straightforward, relaxed songs about love, getting wiser, motherhood, being content, and there’s even a song about fancy shoes. She says, “Someone To Love Like You” is about “reflecting on my life when I was in my 20s and about how insecure I felt; how desperately I wanted to fall in love. This is just one of many reasons I love getting older. I’m less doubtful and less desperate. ‘Now I’m free.'” The music video is cute. Her cowboy is a mustachioed man with a nice smile, a bit of belly, and baggy underwear. Ultimately, that’s a lovable guy.
