Vancouver-born, L.A.-based Genevieve Bellemare has a bright vocal style that darts between soul, jazz and pop, and the songwriting chops to have worked with an estimable list of producers on the music for her debut album “Melancholy Fever” (out Sept. 18 on Verve). That cast includes Mitchell Froom, Paul O’Duffy, Busbee and Tony Berg — the latter saying of their collaboration, “She has an unerring sense of what feels right for her. … It’s refreshing to meet someone whose melodic and lyrical instincts are so completely her own.” That’s on display on her single “Shenanigans,” a soulful stomp in which the singer confesses, “You make me feel like a crazy bitch.” Gus Black directs the video for the song, in which she dons a crazy wig, futilely tries to engage in the party life and, ultimately, contemplates some darker shenanigans.
