Ears Wide Open: The Fuzzy Crystals

The Fuzzy Crystals are a gang of L.A. free spirits trying to channel the ghosts of California’s psychedelic past. And there’s hardly a better way, it seems, that to get “Wasted,” the first psych-pop ditty from the gang of transplants who look like the kinds of folks who throw one helluva backyard party. Their first single, recorded in a Flower District studio in downtown L.A., features singer-bassist Chris Hackman and singer-guitarist Thomas Queyja along with percussionists David James T. and Joel Saur and background vocalists Christina Licciardi and Magdalene Herring. Seemingly oblivious to the notion the ’60s are long over and unaffected by pesky distractions like social status, the Fuzzy Crystals sound sweetly glazed as they welcome listeners to their new summer of love: “It’s a party, it’s a party / We don’t care who you are / Join the crowd, do it loud, and hard.” Check your seriousness at the door, folks. And who brought munchies?
